A Mating Pair of Monarch Butterflies - Karen Hanson
APM, working in conjunction with scientist/reporter Ari Daniel Shapiro and biologist Eduardo Garcia‐Milagros, was awarded a second Google Outreach Developer Grant. The 2012 grant was used to produce a Google Earth tour for One Species at a Time: Stories of Biodiversity on the Move.
The Google Earth tour tells the story of the migration of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), and of the scientists and citizens who study and help them during their increasingly threatened journey. Use of the Google Earth tour interface enhances our explanation of the monarch life cycle, why and where the butterflies migrate, and the anthropogenic threats facing the butterflies.
The tour includes interviews with biologist Karen Oberhauser, who studies the butterfly’s biology and conservation, and runs the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, and María Isabel Ramírez, a researcher based at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City who monitors the quality of the Mexican forests where monarchs overwinter. We also include a handful of citizen science projects in North America centered on monarch butterfly monitoring.
Photographs, videos, custom music, and animation were incorporated into our tour to introduce viewers to the butterflies, the problems they face, and the people trying to save them.
