About Lost & Found Sound

As curator for the Quest for Sound, Jay Allison and the APM team delved into hundreds of audio artifacts, the abundant yield from messages left at the National Quest for Sound Hotline. People left word of recorded letters sent home from the war, collections of odd sounds, found pieces of tape, to create an extensive series exploring American life through recorded sound.

This call for sound, and the use of home recordings, historic broadcasts and everything in between, put a crack in the wall between public radio and its listeners and encouraged all listeners to appreciate their found sounds as parts of a larger sonic landscape. In 2000, the series was awarded The Peabody Documentary Prize.
